The administrative and academic officers of Auburn University have the experience and competence to lead the institution as demonstrated by their extensive experience in academia and their respective fields. Administrative and academic officers are regularly evaluated to ensure ongoing competence and continued professional development. In addition, deans undergo a comprehensive review every five years that includes input from their faculty and staff. To demonstrate that Auburn University’s administrative and academic officers are exceedingly qualified for their positions and as leaders of the institution, a complete roster of these individuals is included in Table 5.4-1 at the end of this narrative. The roster includes the name, title, educational qualifications, and previous professional experience of each officer, as well as links to their curriculum vitae (linked to each person’s educational qualifications) and a description of their current responsibilities (linked to each position title). Administrator Evaluation and Review Evaluation and Review Academic and Administrative Officers All Auburn University employees, including academic and administrative officers, are subject to the same policies as other faculty and staff regarding regular evaluation and reviews and consequentlyundergo an annual performance evaluation with their direct supervisor,,. The Auburn University President (the President) annually evaluates the academic and administrative officers that report to him. This process includes a memo from the administrator describing major accomplishments and goals for the upcoming year, a one-on-one meeting, and a follow-up letter describing the findings of the evaluation. Similarly, the Auburn University Provostand Vice President for Academic Affairs(the Provost) annually evaluates the academic and administrative officers that report to her, following the same process the President uses. Redacted examples of evaluations completed by the President and Provost are provided as documentation. Deans and department chairs/heads undergo an intensive committee review every three to five years, which is described in the next section. In the years when they are not undergoing this intensive review, an anonymous survey is distributed to the faculty and administrative employees who report to them. This survey includes questions about how the dean or chair/head manages general administrative responsibilities, communication and shared governance, personnel, budgets and resources, and academic programs. The full results of this survey, including responses to open-ended questions, are shared with the Chair of the Administrator Evaluation Committee, the Chair of the University Senate, and the Provost. In case of the surveys for chairs/heads, the Provost will disseminate the information to the appropriate dean. To protect anonymity, direct supervisors are prohibited from sharing actual responses from open-ended questions with the administrator being reviewed. Several redacted examples of these reports are included as documentation. Examples of recent annual reviews of Deans and Heads/Chairs are included as documentation. Three- or Five-Year Review of Deans and Chairs/Heads Additionally, every three or five years, academic deans and department heads/chairsundergo an in-depth administrative review by committee, which is overseen by the Provost. This review is intended to provide the supervising administrator with an objective and constructive assessment of the unit leader’s strengths and weaknesses leading to improved performance. All administrators who wish to be considered for reappointment must have a completed review process before they can be considered. No administrator, regardless of the length of term of their appointment, can be reappointed without a formal review. The administrator’s direct supervisor is responsible for scheduling the review and beginning the process by calling for the formation of the review committee The essential steps in the process, which are the same across all administrative reviews, include: A committee is formed with representatives from faculty, administrative professionals, staff, the Student Government Association, the Graduate Student Association, University Senate, and a committee chair from outside the unit who is appointed by the Provost. The administrator being reviewed prepares a brief self-evaluation assessment.
The review committee seeks input from faculty, staff, students, peer administrators, and outside constituents, primarily through anonymous surveys managed by the Office of Institutional Research. The review committee uses the information gathered to compose a report summarizing the administrator’s strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. The administrator meets with their supervisor to discuss the results of the review. The administratorwrites a response letter explaining how they will address the concerns raised from the review. The supervisor and the review committee chair meet with the faculty, staff, and administrative personnel, without the administrator present, for debriefing of the review process and the recommendations for improvement.
The supervisor drafts a summary letter to the administrator outlining steps that will be taken to address weaknesses and recommendations presented in the review committee’s final report. The administrator is allowed five working days from receipt of the supervisor’s summary letter to write an optional letter of response that will be included with the summary letter. Summary letters to deans and any letters of response are copied to the President and the Provost; letters to heads and chairs and any letters of response will be copied to the Provost.
Below are examples of these administrative reviews. - College of Agriculture,
- Samuel Ginn College of Engineering,
- Graudate School ,
- College of Nursing
